A unique freediving adventure to one of the Aran Islands’ most iconic underwater features.

The Wormhole (Irish: Poll na bPéist) is a striking natural formation on the western cliffs of Inishmore, known for its dramatic rectangular shape carved into limestone and deep underwater channels connecting to the Atlantic Ocean.

From above, the Wormhole looks like a perfectly framed window to the sea. Beneath the surface, it’s a world of kelp forests, rock formations, and wide open water, a place even experienced freedivers find deeply memorable.

This trip blends freediving with boat access, local knowledge, and careful planning to create a safe, respectful way to visit this remarkable site.

  • Unique geology: A near-rectangular, ocean-fed pool carved over millennia
  • Iconic natural feature: Recognised locally and internationally as a standout landmark of the Aran Islands
  • Underwater channel: Kelp, and structure for exploration, perfect for intermediate and advanced freedivers
  • Atlantic setting: Clear waters and rugged coastline make the dive feel wild and natural
