Just a short distance from the dramatic cliffs of Dún Aengus lies one of the Aran Islands’ most fascinating natural features the Wormhole (Poll na bPéist). This perfectly rectangular tidal pool, carved into the ancient limestone of Inis Mór, is often described as a true wonder of the world. Its mystery and power have made it one of Ireland’s most remarkable dive sites.
The Wormhole is a tidal pool measuring roughly 30 metres long by 10 metres wide, with a depth that remains uncertain, adding to its allure.
Its name may come from stories of sea serpents (possibly basking sharks) trapped between tides, or from the powerful water surges that puff upward through cracks in the rock, resembling the spout of a whale.
Diving the Wormhole is a rare and special experience, dependent on tide, weather, and diver readiness. Availability is limited and dives must be booked in advance.

Check-In
Arrive at Dive Aran by 08:00. You’ll be greeted by our team and given a gear box and changing space.
Dive Briefind
A briefing will take place approximately 20 minutes before we depart the dive centre.
Boat Departure
A boat will depart from the front of the dive center at 09:00.
Scuba Diving
Dive time is 45 min.
Boat Return
The boat ride typically lasts 25 minutes each way, with a return time of approximately 2-3 hours after departure.

Access is from the boat.
No. The Wormhole is weather and tide dependent, so scheduling flexibility is required.
For scuba, we use 12L steel air tanks with single-valve DIN or Yoke.
No. We don't provide Nitrox.
No. We use wetsuits 7mm (extra shorty 5mm if needed) all year round.
Yes. You will finish at around 12 pm.
