Find your way underwater

Knowing where you are underwater makes diving easier, more relaxed and more enjoyable.

The SSI Navigation Specialty teaches you how to use a compass together with natural features of the underwater environment to plan and follow your route.

You’ll practise these skills during two dives around Inis Mór starting with a shore dive before putting them into practice on a boat dive in real Atlantic diving conditions.

Navigation becomes useful on almost every dive. Being able to keep track of your direction can help you:

  • Find your way back to the boat or exit point
  • Spend less time swimming in the wrong direction
  • Make better use of your air and dive time
  • Become less dependent on following a guide
  • Feel more comfortable exploring unfamiliar dive sites
  • Develop skills useful for more advanced diving
  • Using an underwater compass
  • Estimating distance underwater
  • Natural navigation using the seabed, depth and underwater features
  • Basic underwater navigation patterns
  • Leaving and returning to a designated point
  • The aim isn’t simply to follow a compass. It’s to become more aware of where you are throughout the dive and make better navigation decisions underwater.

You need to:

  • Be a certified Open Water Diver or equivalent
  • Be comfortable diving in open water
  • Meet SSI medical requirements
  • Minimum age: 10 years

You don’t need previous navigation experience, that’s what the course is for.

  • SSI digital learning materials
  • SSI Navigation Specialty certification
  • Navigation Specialty Instructor
  • 1 shore dive
  • 1 boat dive
  • Full scuba equipment
